This article details the steps a candidate needs to complete for the registration process for the Cambridge English Skills Test General and Business variants and the pre-test checks with Talview.
Please ensure that candidates understand that they will have a test day photo taken before they start the General or Business variant of the Cambridge English Skills Test and at the start of every module taken. A candidate cannot take these tests if they do not undertake the pre-test checks which includes the taking of the test day photo.
The Cambridge English Skills Candidate Instructions Booklet (Remote) can be sent to candidates and includes:
- Links to sample tests for the Cambridge English Skills Test
- Links to the Terms and Conditions, which include the Notice to Candidates as well as information on what is allowed in the test room
- The steps to take as part of the pre-test journey
- The steps to take to access Results and an explanation on the Results and "My Best Score" feature.

Starting the Cambridge English Skills Test General or Business
How to log in to Metrica and accessing the test
Candidates will need the following login information to start the test:
- Username
- Password
- Institutional ID/Centre Number.
Rough paper and pens should be provided.
If using the secure browser ensure that this is downloaded and open. The steps to follow can be found in this article.
Candidates access the test via the following URL:
https://www.metritests.com/metrica/
The URL opens the Cambridge English Test Portal (Metrica) and we suggest adding this page as a favourite to the PC/Laptop.
When candidates are seated at their desk the invigilator can start the test. If candidates are taken the test remotely, they will follow the steps in the Candidate Instructions Booklet.
Candidates will need to accept the Terms and Conditions. These are provided to candidates ahead of the Test Day when sending the email.
Once the candidates have accepted the Terms and Conditions, the test will show on the Home page. Clicking on the arrow will take the candidates to the registration page.
Candidate Registration Page
The registration information will show when the candidate first logs-in and clicks on a module/tile to start the test
The candidate will be presented with the candidate information screen for checking and completing. Invigilators should pass any amendments to Centre Staff or the Institutional Test Manager directly.
The information candidates provide will have no effect on their results, it is for research purposes.
Candidates should click on Submit when ready.
The candidate details are then recorded under the 'Your Details' area in their User account on Metrica.
Completing the Talview Pre-test Checks
The pre-test checks are part of AI Lite proctoring
Terms of Use
Candidates will now start the pre-test checks with Talview. They should follow the on-screen instructions. Candidates will be asked to confirm that they accept Talview’s, our invigilation partner, Terms of Use and give consent for data to be captured.
Instructions and Changing Language
Candidates should read the instructions provided. They can also change the language using the drop-down in the top right-hand corner. The pre-test checks with Talview are available in the following languages: English French Portuguese Spanish Italian Romanian Japanese. The Cambridge English Test Portal, Metrica and the Cambridge English Skills Test is always in English.
Allow Popups
Candidates need to allow access to popups and to the microphone and web camera. Candidates should click the Allow button.
Allow Screen Share
The next step asks candidates to confirm that they allow the sharing of the screen. Candidates should click on Proceed ahead.
Candidates need to select the Entire Screen tab and click on the image of their screen, then click Share.
Test Day Photo – Face Capture
The Test Day Photo is taken as part of the pre-test checks with the AI Integration with Talview
Candidates will then be asked to take a picture of their face.
Candidates need to follow the useful tips on the screen and to select the camera type from the dropdown menu if the camera is not detected automatically.
The candidate photo can be changed or added by a user with the Institutional Manager user role.
This completes the pre-test checks with Talview.
On the timeline screen the candidate now needs to click on the Open button for the first module they are to take.
The candidate will now be provided with the instructions and information about taking the Cambridge English Skills Test on the Cambridge English Test Portal, Metrica.
Audio and Microphone checks
Before starting the Listening and Speaking tests, candidates need to check their headphones and microphone.
Each module starts with a page of instructions specific to the module.
The Listening test has a sound check page to ensure the candidate can hear the test audio clearly:
The Speaking test has a sound and microphone check to ensure audio can be heard and recorded successfully.
For all modules, candidates should read the instructions carefully before clicking on the arrow in the bottom right corner to proceed.
Closing the Test
Invigilators must ensure all browsers are closed once candidates have completed the test
When the test ends, candidates will be presented with requests for feedback and confirmation that the test is complete. The first screen requests feedback on the AI Invigilation service from Talview. The second screen includes a link to a survey on taking the test and closes the test.
To close the test, click the Close button.

If more than one module is being taken the candidate must navigate to the timeline screen so they are ready to start the next module.
If a candidate finishes early, the invigilator can instruct the candidate to click the End Test button. They will then be asked if they want to Submit their answers, click OK and End the test.
